Governor Susana Martinez Unveils New Mexico Centennial Postage Stamp
SANTA FE – Governor Susana Martinez today unveiled a new U.S. Postage stamp to commemorate New Mexico’s Centennial of Statehood in 2012.
The Governor was joined on the Santa Fe Plaza by Department of Cultural Affairs Secretary Veronica Gonzales, Santa Fe Postmaster Yasmin Montaño and artist Doug West, whose artwork is featured on the first-class “Forever” stamp. West’s image titled “Sanctuary” is a view of the Rio Puerco looking northeast at sunset. The Rio Puerco is a tributary of the Rio Grande and flows west of Albuquerque.
“I am honored to unveil this beautiful new U.S. postage stamp, one that commemorates our historic Centennial and distinctively represents New Mexico,” said Governor Martinez. “The uniquely New Mexico image by artist Doug West will represent our state well . . . throughout this nation and across the world.”
The official date of issuance for the new commemorative stamp is expected to be on New Mexico Statehood Day, January 6, 2012. More information on the time and place for this important issuance will be available later this fall.
New Mexico was officially welcomed as the 47th State in the Union on Jan. 6, 1912 when President William H. Taft signed the statehood legislation.

The Centennial Children's Legacy Fund is created to live beyond 2012 in service to children statewide. The Fund will be accessible to charitable organizations working to enhance the education and welfare of New Mexico’s children.
While the Centennial is a commemoration of the last one hundred years, the Centennial Children’s Legacy Fund is a gift for the next one hundred years.
