The Harwood Museum of Art has long considered itself the institutional home of internationally acclaimed artist Agnes Martin. In 1995 the Harwood inaugurated the Agnes Martin Gallery, an octagonal space permanently exhibiting seven of Martin’s paintings.
Upon the March 2012 centennial of Martin’s birth, the Harwood presents an exhibition of Martin’s rarely seen biomorphic work from 1954-1959, as well as the transitional works tracing her subtle conversion from biomorphic shapes to linear grids. Works on paper from the same time period will be on display in an adjoining gallery.
A fundraising birthday celebration will be held on March 22, followed by a panel discussion on March 24 featuring presenters who knew Agnes Martin well during her years in Taos.
