This cultural event attracts about 15-thousand people each year, is the largest event of its kind in the world and is the largest event in Valencia County. More than forty pigs will be used by 25 teams, who will compete in a number of cooking competitions.
The cost to view this cultural event is $10 for adults. Children 10 and under get in free. Cost includes: admission to the matanza, “Kiddie Corral,” arts and crafts fair, entertainment and, of course, all-you-can eat food.
The matanza is arguably one of the oldest cultural events in the state. It can be traced back hundreds of years to Europe when the Moors occupied Spain. The Moors did not eat pork because they believed the pig was an “unclean” animal. Spanish villagers soon discovered that when they slaughtered a pig the Moors would distance themselves. When the Spaniards came to the New World they brought that tradition with them.
All proceeds go to fund college scholarships for Valencia County students.
